Welcome to the Strides for Africa campaign page. A combination of images observed on one Sunday afternoon across rural Ethiopia in 2009 forever changed our lives and started a journey to make a difference to better the lives of those less fortunate in Africa.
In 2009, my family traveled to Ethiopia to bring our adopted son home. On that trip, we made a life changing trip through rural Ethiopia and realized the challenges associated with obtaining water each and every day for the rural African population. Can you imagine walking up to six miles a day to obtain just 4-5 gallons of dirty water for your families use?
Upon our return we were very determined to help in changing the lives for not only folks in Ethiopia but also in other African nations. We were very fortunate to find a great foundation that was committed to changing lives in Ethiopia. A Glimmer of Hope is the most amazing foundation we have ever worked with.
Why water? Our most basic necessity as humans is water. If women and children don’t have to put the time and energy to retrieve dirty water each day, and instead obtain water from a clean source at a closer distance, it will give families in rural Africa the ability to have less concern over waterborne disease. It allows women more freedom to be farmers, raise their children, and be entrepreneurs
Our primary fund-raising event is a 5K run/walk in Madison, Wisconsin on the 3rd Saturday in August. On August 17, 2013, we will have 4th annual event. For more information about this event see www.stridesforafrica.org. This event kicks off Africa Fest 2013. For more information on Africa Fest, see www.africanassociationofmadison.org
Our goal this year is to raise $8,400 for a shallow borehole well in Tigray. The Tigray region, located in northern Ethiopia, is home to nearly 4.8 million people. However, only 39% of Tigrinians currently have access to safe, clean water.
Access to clean water is at a critically low level in the Seharti Samre and Mai Adrasha areas of Tigray. Most families in Tigray rely on water from unprotected streams and ponds. Since the responsibility of fetching water falls primarily to women, many Tigrinian women and girls travel long distances to collect dirty water – keeping them out of work and school.
We thank you for consideration of a donation to help in making an impact for this truly special humanitarian cause, and we look forward to sharing the results of our campaign with you!
A Glimmer of Hope lifts women and children out of extreme poverty in rural Ethiopia. Using an enterpreneurial model it provides clean water, schools, health clinics, and micro-finance loans, one village at a time. 100% of all donations go directly to funding these projects. Glimmer's endowment covers all its operating expenses and even replaces credit card transaction fees. Every dollar donated through Glimmer reachs the people in need. Over the last 10 years, Glimmer has completed more than 5000 projects and improved 2.4 million lives.
