Schools4Schools Campaign
An education is a child’s passport out of poverty. It is common for rural children - especially girls - to drop out or be forced to travel far away from their homes in order to attend school. Two out of every five children do not even get the chance to go to school. The enrollment rate for high school education in Ethiopia is only 12%. The majority of existing schools are overcrowded, dark and without chairs or desks. Most operate on a shift basis but even then there is an average of 90 students in each classroom.
A Glimmer of Hope believes education is a key factor in helping Ethiopia move from being a developing country into a nation capable of sustaining its own people. Education is the foundation for higher living standards and an important tool in the long-term eradication of poverty. It lowers birth rates, increases economic productivity and equips children with the skills necessary to participate in the workplace.
Since 2000, A Glimmer of Hope has built more than 300 schools and classrooms. These projects include building and restoring schools –high schools and primary schools – and the purchase of essential school supplies and furnishings. Today, more than 200,000 children are receiving an education in dramatically improved learning environments constructed and furnished by A Glimmer of Hope.
There is extreme need in Dali, Ethiopia and students from schools all over have committed to help bring opportunity to children in this poverty stricken community.
