Program Manager:
I joined A Glimmer of Hope in January 2010, and I have two distinct roles here— as a member of the programs team I work alongside Norma to manage our projects in Ethiopia, and as an attorney admitted to the New York bar and Glimmer’s legal counsel, I handle Glimmer’s legal needs.
My interest in international development was first piqued in high school, when I spent a summer volunteering in a rural community in Ecuador. That summer exposed me to the realities of life in the developing world and made me realize I could choose to do something about it. I went on to college, law school, and a job as an attorney at a large corporate law firm, wanting to pursue training and develop skills that I knew would serve me well when I returned to a focus on international development.
I discovered A Glimmer of Hope while looking to find my way back to the path I originally started down in high school. After practicing law for four and a half years in London and New York, and as a birthday present to myself, I quit my law firm job in March 2009 and moved to Austin to pursue a new life and a new career in the non-profit sector. I contacted Stephanie, Glimmer’s Director of Operations, to ask if Glimmer had any need for volunteer legal services, and with two new projects under consideration that required legal input, I was brought on to assist full-time on a volunteer basis. After three months as a volunteer, I was hired onto the team, and I couldn’t believe my luck—finding a job in international development, what I had always wanted, right here in Austin.
