Kendra Beach

Director of Communications

I develop and implement communications strategies to support A Glimmer of Hope’s efforts to lift women and children out of poverty in rural Ethiopia. The communications and marketing team ensures our supporters and donors connect with projects on the ground in Ethiopia and see the impact of their partnership with Glimmer. The opportunity to work with our passionate and smart staff here in Austin and in Addis, and share the life-changing programs at work in Ethiopia, allows me to truly enjoy my job and learn something new each day.

Previously, as a director at Spitfire Strategies in Washington, D.C., I provided communications counsel to nonprofits and foundations working on issues from health care reform to sustainable seafood to the environment. My work at Spitfire included the development of communications plans for Voices for America’s Children, message development for AYUSA Global Youth Exchange, and strategic counsel to advocates advancing the Affordable Care Act at the state level. I led the production of a series of educational videos for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and drafted materials for the American Public Health Association. I also trained and coached nonprofit leaders on strategy development, policymaker outreach and writing. During my tenure at Spitfire, I had the pleasure of working with clients such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Surdna Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Population Council and Rock the Vote.

Prior to Spitfire, I conducted research projects on campaign finance reform at the Campaign Finance Institute, a D.C.-based nonprofit. I began my career in Virginia politics, serving as deputy finance director at the Virginia Democratic Caucus and as a staffer in the office of former U.S. Senator Charles S. Robb.

Outside of the office, I served on the board of directors for Community Bridges, a D.C.-area nonprofit organization working with disadvantaged middle and high school girls, and I currently volunteer with the Sustainable Food Center and Slow Food Austin. I love to cook for my friends and family, spend time on the hike and bike trail, and come home to my husband and dog, Beatrice.
