Country Director (Ethiopia)
I am the Country Director of A Glimmer of Hope Ethiopia. I develop and implement policies, strategies, standards and procedures, and produce timely and accurate internal communications regarding program goals, timelines, deliverables, and status reports and work very closely with the Austin staff to ensure that the requirements of our organization, the donors and our partners are as efficient as possible. Additionally, I am directly involved in field level monitoring and evaluation of the projects to ensure that cost and quality standards are met and provide training to the partners to develop their implementation capacity.
I was born and raised in Adwa, Ethiopia. I graduated with a BSc degree in Agricultural Engineering from Alemaya University, Ethiopia in 1987 and I received my Master of Engineering in Land and Water Development from the International Institute for Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering (IHE), Delft, the Netherlands in 1995 and my MSc degree in Hydraulic Engineering from IHE, the Netherlands in 2003. I joined A Glimmer of Hope in August 2008. From September 2007 to August 2008, I worked as a National Consultant for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program (WASH) for Planning and Management where I was responsible for the overall coordination, planning and management of the implementation of the National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Program (NRWSP). From October 2003 to September 2007, I was Head of Water Resources Bureau of the National Regional State of Tigray with more than 700 permanent staff at the regional Head Office. From April 1987 to October 1996, I worked for the Ministry of Water Resources of the federal government as an expert in different positions. I'm married and have two children, ages 12 and 10.
Ethiopia is a poor sub-Saharan country where about 2/3rd of its rural population does not have access to portable water supply, sanitation and hygiene, basic education and health services. A Glimmer of Hope is a compassionate social enterprise seeking to make a sustainable difference in the lives of the poorest people in Ethiopia. I was very impressed by the level of commitment of the founders and the staff of the foundation, its implementation approaches, and the direct impact of the projects executed by the foundation. These all gave me the determination and will to join A Glimmer of Hope's effort to make a difference in the lives of these poor people in rural Ethiopia.
Water is the nucleus of every human development and there is no real life without it.
